The Financial Intelligence Unit (Cellule de renseignement financier - CRF) has published its 22nd annual report, which covers the work it did in 2023. This report showcases the CRF's ongoing efforts in combating money laundering and terrorist financing.

Activities and Key Statistics

In 2023, the CRF received a total of 44,519 suspicious transaction reports, a slight decline compared with the previous year. The reports were placed into different categories – namely, standardised reports (SARe and STRe) and traditional reports (SAR and STR).

  • Reports Received: The total number of reports fell from 53,259 in 2022 to 44,519 in 2023. However, non-standardised reports related to money laundering or predicate offences increased, from 10,871 in 2022 to 12,395 in 2023.
  • Money Laundering: The CRF continued to shore up its analytical capabilities so it can better assess the reports it receives and forward reports on complex criminal schemes to the public prosecutors.
  • Terrorist Financing: The number of reports related to terrorist financing remained stable, even as international cooperation efforts increased slightly in the wake of the attacks in Israel in October 2023.
National and International Cooperation

The CRF continued to cooperate closely with the national and international authorities, including the judicial authorities, supervisory authorities and self-regulatory bodies. It also participated in a range of international task forces, such as the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and the Egmont Group of Financial Intelligence Units.

Initiatives and Developments

  • Training and Conferences: The CRF participated in a host of training sessions and conferences to educate professionals about money laundering and terrorist financing risks.
  • Technology and Innovation: The CRF continued to explore the opportunities offered by new technologies, including artificial intelligence, to improve its analytical capabilities.
